Travel & touring

A weekend away or a longer journey: choose a trip that leaves room to enjoy where you are.

You can build a cycling holiday around a single base, move between overnight stops or choose a short section of a long-distance route. You do not have to ride the entire line on the map. These UK and overseas ideas are starting points for planning, with different surfaces and styles of travel.

The suggested trip lengths below are editorial planning ideas, not official completion times. Confirm the exact route, current access, daily distance and overnight arrangements before booking.

UK ideas: start close, go somewhere new

England and Scotland · Coastal touring

Coast and Castles: Newcastle towards Edinburgh

For riders who want seaside stops and history between overnight stays, the Coast and Castles route offers a journey between Newcastle and Edinburgh. Northumberland’s tourism body describes the route as 192 miles, with 85 miles following or close to its coastline.

Make it your trip: take a manageable section over a long weekend, or plan a longer point-to-point tour. Set daily stages around accommodation and the exact route variant. Coastal weather and onward transport deserve as much thought as the sightseeing.

Before booking: check surface and gradients on your chosen stages, bicycle reservations for trains and secure overnight storage. Do not assume the whole route is traffic-free.

King Alfred’s Way: a different kind of southern England

This 350km circular route is predominantly off-road. It is an option for riders with suitable fitness and experience on rough terrain, rather than an easy paved holiday simply because it is a signed long-distance idea.

Make it your trip: plan several overnight stops or research a shorter section. Allow time for rough surfaces and slower loaded riding; a road-distance estimate can be misleading here.

Before booking: check the current route file, surface conditions, bike and tyre suitability, legal access and overnight options. Wet ground can change the character of a day. Obtain the route creator’s current information before setting out.

Why we love this video

GCN puts a refreshing idea at the centre of this ride: adventure can begin close to home. Simon and Hank’s outing gives the route a story, with the anticipation of heading out and the challenge of an off-road journey, rather than simply turning it into a distance target. It is an inviting companion to the planning information above—something to help you imagine the trip before deciding how you would tackle it.

The film dates from 2020, and its ride should not replace the current route file or access information. Its ambitious pace is inspiration, rather than a suggested schedule for your first loaded tour.

Overseas ideas: rivers, towns and time to stop

France · River touring

The Loire: choose a stretch, not a mileage target

La Loire à Vélo offers a signposted route network along the Loire, with options to combine riding and rail. Its approximately 900km headline includes the wider network, loops and connections; it should not be treated as the distance of every end-to-end itinerary.

Make it your trip: choose a few linked stages for a first overseas tour, or use one town as a base for day rides. Leave space for visits and lunch stops rather than scheduling every day to the maximum distance.

Before booking: confirm bike-hire collection and return arrangements, current rail bicycle rules and the exact route to each accommodation. A signposted itinerary is not a promise that every section has the same surface or traffic conditions.

Germany and Austria · River touring

The Danube: Passau towards Vienna

The official Austrian route resources divide the Danube Cycle Path between Passau and Vienna into stages with maps and route descriptions. That makes it a useful starting point for building a trip around overnight towns, rather than guessing at a single daily distance.

Make it your trip: choose a week of stages that suits your pace, or a shorter selection with time in a destination town. A riverside route still needs checking for side changes, crossings and the final approach to your overnight stop.

Before booking: compare the exact stage options and current crossing arrangements, check rail or hire-bike logistics and verify what luggage support, if any, your booking includes.

Our Danube video pick · Bike Trekking with Karl

The Danube Cycle Path! Grein to Vienna!

Why we love this video

Karl brings exactly the kind of enthusiasm that makes you want to stop reading about a cycling holiday and start planning one. His Grein–Vienna journey combines a clear sense of place with an approachable introduction to touring on an e-bike. The wonderfully human moment when he gets to grips with switching on the assistance is part of the appeal: this is an adventure you can picture joining, rather than a performance you have to measure up to.

With chapters taking viewers from Grein through Melk and the Wachau Valley to Vienna, the journey has a satisfying shape. Karl makes room for the destination as well as the riding, ending with an exploration of Vienna. We love that mixture of curiosity, humour and excitement. For anyone tempted by a Danube cycling holiday, this is a lovely place to start—and a strong reason to explore more of Bike Trekking with Karl’s travel videos.

The film covers Grein–Vienna, not the entire Passau–Vienna itinerary. Karl identifies Freewheel Holidays as the trip’s sponsor.

Build the holiday around an enjoyable day

Try one loaded ride at home before committing to daily stages abroad. Include time for navigation, stops and checking in. Decide which parts you want to organise yourself and which you want a provider to handle; luggage transfers, cycle hire and accommodation are separate services unless your package says otherwise.
