Touring luggage weight calculator

Know what you’re carrying before you pack the bike.

By Alex Rowan

Add each item’s weight and quantity. The calculator does the multiplication, totals each section and shows your luggage, loaded bike and optional rider-inclusive weight. Example items are starting points, not measured product weights.

1. Bike and rider

Bike weight includes racks, pedals, lights and bottle cages, but excludes the bags and items below. Changing units converts the weights you’ve entered.

2. Bags, clothing and tools

Include the bags themselves. Enter each item once and choose where it is carried.

3. Camping equipment

Enter weight per item, then how many you’re taking.

4. Food

Enter weight per item, then how many you’re taking.

5. Water

Enter litres per bottle or container, then the quantity. Add empty bottles separately under bags and tools.

6. Optional manufacturer limits

Includes bike, rider and luggage. Check your bike’s manual; leave blank if unknown.

Leave unknown limits blank. Use manufacturer documentation. Enter a system limit only if it includes bike, rider and luggage. Rack checks compare the bags and items assigned to that rack; they do not confirm fit or other bag, frame or wheel limits.

Make the numbers useful

  • Weigh actual packed items where possible. Wet clothing, food packaging and spares count too.
  • Assign bags and their contents to the same rack. Body-carried items still count towards the rider-inclusive total.
  • Water is estimated at 1 kg per litre. This excludes the container.
  • The heaviest starting point may be just after collecting food and filling bottles.
  • A total below an entered limit is only a numerical comparison, not confirmation the bike is safe to load. Check every applicable manufacturer limit, secure the luggage and assess handling separately.
